Lohja Secondary School

Lohja, Finland

Lohja high school in Finland needed an unconventional flexible space for their students to work and interact in. Our Pippin lounge chairs provided a smart, fun, comfortable and portable solution.

The Vision

The KT Interior Oy team was tasked by the project’s interior designers from Kohe Architects to source quality furniture that would work within the design philosophy for the high school’s learning space. The school’s curriculum requirements demanded flexible and modifiable user-oriented learning environments. The key stipulation was that pupils and teaching staff would not be expected to adapt their activities to the learning environment – the environment must be highly flexible and shape itself to the users.

The Challenge

Furniture in learning environments must be capable of withstanding heavy use, including pupils jumping and falling onto chairs. In fact, durability was so important to the customer, they wanted to test the furniture themselves before purchasing.

Visibility was also high on the list of needs. Furniture must enable a clear unobstructed view from the front to the rear for all users. Also, the furniture would need to be arranged in a group format to allow pupils and teaching staff to move around the space unhindered.

The Solution

With adaptability and flexibility at the forefront of their minds, the KT Interior Oy team identified that our playful Pippin lounge chairs were not only the perfect solution, their unique design was a refreshing break from tradition.

Designed by award-winning British furniture designer Lucy Kurrein, one of the moveable Pippin lounge chair’s most distinctive feature is the practical, intuitive and customisable handle strap inspired by the heel tags of Dr. Martens boots. Pirre Niilijärvi-Kekkonen of KT Interior Oy revealed “with wheels and strap handle, it’s something new that other manufacturers don’t have at the moment. The chair is very comfortable to sit in and easy to move.”

Pippin is a fusion of comfort and agility. This cone-shaped chair has a super-comfortable cupped seat and optional hidden wheels in the base which allows users at the school to effortlessly move, twist or turn the chairs to change their learning space and promote collaboration.

The sustainability credentials of Pippin, including its SEAL Award for sustainable product design, also impressed the client. Built for longevity, castors can be switched, handles replaced and the zip on, zip off cover makes cleaning and reupholstering a cinch. Because the casing isn’t glued, it can be easily dissembled to be repaired, replaced, recycled or reprocessed. To demonstrate confidence in their durability, like all NaughtOne products, each of the 28 Pippin chairs specified for the project came with a 10-year warranty.

The Reaction

“Working with NaughtOne was easy as always” said Pirre. As the chair was just launched and we didn’t have it yet in our showroom, so we got test chair from our NaughtOne team . The end users are very happy with the chair finding it very comfortable to sit on and easy to move – it was love at first sight!”
