NaughtOne is ten: interview with kieron bakewell

As NaughtOne hits it’s 10th birthday, we speak to NaughtOne’s design director Kieron Bakewell about all things NaughtOne.Kieron option 1

How important are your green credentials when it comes to design? 

lt’s always gone hand in hand with us. We’re a generation brought up with an awareness on environmental impact and as designers and manufacturers we have a responsibility and we take this seriously. lt’s good that these days the whole industry is taking this seriously too – not only do we have to design our products consciously but we also have to prove it. Last year we became members of FlSP (furniture industry sustainability program) and we now also prove we buy all of our timber responsibly. For me l’d like to support such programs as SKA and LEEAD and encourage the industry to drive everybody to design consciously.

Do NaughtOne’s products offer longevity?

Our products are built to last with quality materials. lmportantly, we try to design without the influence of fashion in the hope that our products will be cherished for years to come.

What’s changed in NaughtOne’s design process in the last 10 years?

We’re more technical and modern in our development process now. We have the fortune of a larger market reach giving us confidence to invest into tooling to achieve consistency and efficient production. We design products and components with CNC production techniques in mind wherever possible allowing for a more measured and replicable approach. Tooling has also allowed us to be more creative and free with form, so in one way you could also say that our design aesthetic has become a little more organic.

Future plans for NaughtOne’s product offering?

We’ll continue to design free standing furniture and no doubt focusing on one of key strengths of upholstery. We’re very interested to see how technology is influencing our lives and see it’s potential to design furniture around some of our new behaviors.

Where do you see NaughtOne in ten years?

Operating in a global marketplace with a product range that can be produced globally too. Of course this can only be achieved by continuing to be who we are, and creating great products that people actually see value in buying.
