The redevelopment of Manchester Central Library aimed to celebrate the building’s heritage while transforming it into a vibrant, accessible space for the modern community. Designed by Spaceinvader, the interiors needed to balance the library’s historic grandeur with contemporary function and comfort.
NaughtOne furniture was selected to complement the library’s clean architectural lines and natural materials, providing welcoming spaces for reading, research and collaboration. The result is an environment that feels both classic and current — a fitting reflection of the city itself.
Creating a modern interior within a Grade II listed building demanded sensitivity and precision. Every choice had to respect the original character of the space while enhancing its usability for today’s visitors.
Furniture needed to be robust and versatile, offering comfort for long periods of study and flexibility for events and workshops, all without detracting from the building’s historic charm.
Working alongside Spaceinvader and Dragonfly, NaughtOne supplied a carefully curated mix of pieces that blend functionality with understated elegance. Soft seating and collaborative furniture were used to define zones without imposing on the architecture, helping to create an atmosphere that’s calm, inclusive and enduring.
The completed space demonstrates how thoughtful design can bridge past and present — restoring a civic landmark while preparing it for generations to come.
